8 Years Sober

The good life is waiting for you after you are freed from the prison of your own thoughts.

I am in my eight year of being sober.  I just took what I learned in the VA program I attended and kept it up and her I am a sober guy and life is good.

7 Years

The good life is waiting for you after you are freed from the prison of your own thoughts.

I have been sober now for over 10 years, I never thought that it could be possible for
me to stay sober for that length of time.  Living one day at a time, hour for hour works, if
you want it to work.  I now help other veterans in a transitional program to re-establish
themselves in society and stay free from alcohol and drugs.  It can be done but the
reality of it is that only you can do it and we help you along your path to recovery.

6 Years Now

It is hard to believe but it is going on 6 years since my last drink.
I never thought it would last this long and how my life would change.
Since leaving the Veterans Substance Abuse  Program in Gainesville,
I attended Santa Fe Community College and took all there certificate
programs in computers and computer security, got a job at Florida
Works in Gainesville, left there and got a job with Marion County in
Ocala, left there for my current position as Resident  Manager for the
Ocala Ritz Veterans Village at the age of 68.  I actually retired at the
age of 59 and nearly drank myself to death until the age of 63, how
life can change just by dumping the bottle.  My current job also includes
helping the veteran tenants to stay sober and to help them move on
in life, which is all satisfying work.

Past blogs will tell you how I did it and if any of it helps you, I will
consider it a blessing from God.

Remember, yesterday does not count anymore, only the minute, the hour
and day you are in now.

21 Months Alcohol Free

The good life is waiting for you
after you are freed from the prison
of your own thoughts.

I have been sober for 21 months now and
somehow it only feels like I had my last drink
yesterday. I have since found a great apartment,
a part time job in a IT department, which I am
enjoying, it actually gives me somewhere
to go each day. I take courses at the local
community college in computer technology
and I now have a little dog called Ruby as a
pal in the afternoons to play with. So between
work, school, home work and Ruby I have a
full day.

I have not gone to a AA meeting in three months,
so I decided to attend a meeting last night. I was
surprised that I only new 3 people in attendance,
as we were chatting after the meeting, I found out
that many others had returned to drinking and
pill popping.

I no longer have the urge for a drink and attend
many social functions where alcohol is served, I
don't have a problem with that and always stick
to my diet coke. All my co workers and friends
know I am an alcoholic and I am up front about
that fact. I even think it works to my advantage
to let it be known because I am sure someone
would intercede, if I attempted to have a drink
at a weak moment. I follow all that I learned
while going through the veterans substance
abuse program here in Gainesville, Florida.
and I am only a phone call away from my case
manager at the VA (Irma) and Dr Brandt the
hottest looking chick I know . I don't think she
appreciates me calling her that, but I can,
because this is my blog.

I have not entered into a relationship but frequently
date and have a special lady that means a lot to me.

I got my life back and I continue to be a sober
alcoholic Marine veteran. Thanks to all the guys
and gals at the Veterans Hospital in Gainesville,
Florida and to my God.

Veterans In Recovery Reunion

The good life is waiting for you
after you are freed from the prison
of your own thoughts.

I attended the 2nd Veterans in Recovery
Reunion in Gainesville, Fl held last weekend.
It was a great fun party, attended by at least
one hundred and fifty veterans in recovery.

BBQ ribs, chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers and
all the trimmings were supplied and enjoyed
by all attending.

It was great to see all the Staff, from Doctors,
Rn's, Case Managers and Health Technicians
all enjoying the results of their hard and
demanding work, 150 sober veterans having
a great time without drugs or alcohol.

It was also great fun to see old friends sober
and drug free, shaking hands, giving and
receiving large hugs, wow, what a great
feeling.

Dan, the ladies man and Lewis, The gold chain
man did all the cooking and what a job. The
rest of the staff made sure all we veterans were
well fed and I must add the deserts were great
and fattening and oh yes, we all enjoyed our soft
drinks.

Two guest speakers were on hand sharing the
despair they had as users, then entering the
Veterans Health System Substance Abuse
Treatment Program, then using the skills
they were taught, their desires, hopes and
successes as Sober Veteran Alcoholics. They
had the Veterans in Recovery Groups total
attention.

Irma, my case manager was there with her
young son already a entrepreneur, you can
actually see the love flowing between Mom
and Son. He can't help but have a great
life with the kind of Mom he has.

Also my favorite Dr. Jennine Brandt was
there, a very professional lady with a big
heart for we Veterans and I might add,
because this is my blog and because I can,
is one hot looking chick.

To All - A Job Well Done and a SPECIAL Thank
You to the Veterans Health System for
helping us salvage our lives, you see a
government can mandate a service, but not
the very real love and care showed us by the
Staff at the Substance Abuse Program,
Veterans Hospital, Gainesville, Fl
